  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups oats (quick cooking or old fashioned)
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
  • Water (as needed)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugars until light and fluffy.
  2. Beat in water and vanilla extract.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Gradually mix into creamed mixture and fold in oats.
  4. Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto greased baking sheets.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for two minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  6. Prepare icing by mixing milk with sifted powdered sugar and adjusting with water to desired consistency.
  7. Dip the tops of cooled cookies into icing and let excess drip off.
